The Horses and Stud

Ash Hill became a private stud farm in 1946 under the ownership of Mrs. Denny Johnson. However, the earliest written references to horses being sold at Ash Hill date back to 1799 when Eyre Evans auctioned his broodmares.

Mrs. Denny Johnson was a noted horsewoman who, in the 1950's and 60's won over 100 point-to-points. However, this career was curtailed when Mrs. Johnson was 50 because her doctor advised her to choose a safer sport--that safer sport turned out to be 3-day eventing. In spite of her advancing years, Mrs. Johnson excelled in eventing as well, representing Ireland in Badminton, Burghley, Haras Du Pin and was short-listed for the Olympics in Mexico City.

Mares, yearlings and foals from the stud have been successfully sold at Tattersalls and Goffs, with prices in excess of £100,000 being regularly achieved. Services provided include boarding and sales preparation for mares, foals and yearlings for Tattersall's Houghton and October sales, the December sales, and Goffs sales.

The present day Simon's daughter Olivia Johnson also keeps a varirty of horses at Ash Hill. She is also an accomplished horsewoman and equestrian instructor, having won many times in the R.D.S. show ring.
