As twilight settles over the grounds of Ash Hill, a quiet, ancient tradition unfolds. For years, our estate has been privileged to host nesting Barn Owls, bringing rare wildlife magic directly to our guests.

A Rare and Protected Sanctuary

The Barn Owl (Tyto alba) is one of Ireland’s most captivating nocturnal birds, yet it is also the most threatened owl species in the country. Recently added to the 'Red-list' in the Birds of Conservation Concern in Ireland, the national population is estimated at just 400 to 800 breeding pairs.

At Ash Hill, preserving these majestic creatures and providing them a safe haven is deeply important to us.

The Guest Experience: Witnessing the Owls

Guests staying at Ash Hill have the unique opportunity to observe the owls during nesting season without disturbing their natural habits.

• Discreet Viewing: We have set up a quiet, discreet viewing spot within the house, allowing guests to catch a glimpse of the nesting owls while keeping their environment entirely peaceful.

• When to Watch: The owls are generally active between 10:00 PM and dawn.

• Nighttime Hunting: As dusk falls, you may spot them silently gliding across the estate pastures and gardens as they hunt small mammals, including field mice, bank voles, and brown rats.

Listening to the Nest

Unlike the traditional hooting of other owl species, the Barn Owl is known for its distinct, eerie screech and rasping calls, particularly when returning to the nest with food for their young.
